Dave Matthews Teams With Black Eyed Peas, Robert Randolph at Outside Lands

August 31st, 2009

A boisterous and chatty Dave Matthews took to his Saturday night headlining set at San Francisco’s Outside Lands with his band, augmented by long-time compatriot Tim Reynolds on guitar and newest member Jeff Coffin (previously of Bela Fleck’s Flecktones) on sax. He came armed with his arsenal of hits along with new artillery such as ‘Why I Am’ and ‘Shake Me Like a Monkey.’

Matthews seemed to be in a jolly mood as he tore through crowd-pleasers like ‘Ants Marching’ and ‘Two Step.’ But one of the most notable moments of the night came during ‘Jimi Thing’ when Will.I.Am and Fergie stormed the stage at the end of a rousing jam to add an MC element to Matthews’ roots rock. Matthews actually alluded to the sit-in a month ago when he told Spinner, during a press conference for the festival, that he “might” try to corral such a collaboration.

Fun as that may have been, the true highlight of the set came during the encore when Matthews pointed out a new special guest by saying, “That’s Robert Randolph right there.” And true to form, the sacred steel guitarist brought the heat for a double encore of covers ‘All Along the Watchtower’ and ‘Thank You (Falletinme By Mice Elf Agin),’ the latter of which included multiple-peaks in the style of ‘Freebird,’ eliciting a rousing response from the packed crowd.

After that, Outside Lands went dark for the night but will rev up again Sunday, including an early afternoon set on the main stage by Robert Randolph.

Glasvegas Wave Farewell to Festival Season

August 31st, 2009

It’s mid-afternoon in Glasvegas‘ tourbus behind the NME/Radio1 stage at Reading Festival, and the Glasgow band are looking back on a summer season that has taken them the length and breadth of Euorpe — with the odd surprise thrown in.

For instance, frontman James Allan tells Spinner, inbetween thoughtful bites of a ham sandwich, having Oasis go on before them at Spanish festival Benicassim.

“Oasis supported us at Benicassim this year. I was walking to the side of the stage as they were playing their last song of the set, and it was ‘I Am the Walrus’,” he says. “I thought: ‘Gee, thanks guys.’”

The Gallagher brothers might have proven to be a hard act to follow with their epic cover of the late-era Beatles masterpiece, but who’s having the last laugh now? Only one of these bands, let’s face it, has survived the festival season intact.

Glasvegas’s summer highlights included a T in the Park appearance bassist Paul Donoghue desribed as “amazing. We were in the King Tut’s Tent and there were people climbing the scaffolding. And it’s a very Scottish thing — you had people yelling ‘jump’!”

Nine Inch Nails ‘Wave Goodbye’ To Chicago, IL

August 31st, 2009

Nine Inch Nails played the last of 2 dates scheduled at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, IL last night which are said to be the last NIN concerts ever for that region of the country. The band has already made their way to Toronto, ON for a headlining performance at the Virgin Festival ‘09 at the Molson Amphitheater tonight (the final international date for Nine Inch Nails) … but here is a shot taken by NIN photographer Rob Sheridan of the fans filing out of the Aragon Ballroom after last night’s performance:

Next up for Nine Inch Nails, the last 4 dates of the Wave Goodbye Tour which will all take place at different venues in Los Angeles, CA (The Palladium, The Henry Fonda Theatre, The Wiltern and Echoplex). Trent Reznor gave an interview to The Los Angeles Times about these final, final shows … here is a portion of that interview:

There was something about a Nine Inch Nails show in the daylight that just felt wrong. “Maybe,” Trent Reznor said in a sly murmur, “it was the fact that it wasn’t dark.” Reznor, the angst auteur behind Nine Inch Nails, toured this summer with Jane’s Addiction with every intention of retiring from the road. The plan, Reznor had said, was to put the band’s concert life on hiatus for a decade or so and to say farewell with a twist, as the opening act for the elder Jane’s latest reunion. But there was all that sunshine. “I chose for us to play first; I thought it would be a respectful thing for Jane’s and also be interesting for us to have the challenge of playing often and in daylight,” Reznor said. “But then, well, these were the last shows we were doing. We could pull off something better than that, something that leaves a better taste in our mouths.” That something is now the hottest ticket in town — four sold-out L.A. shows in the next eight days, all in venues that vary from small to tiny in comparison to the band’s usual arena settings. On Wednesday, it’s the refurbished Hollywood Palladium; the next night, it’s the Henry Fonda Theater. On Sept. 5, Nails will play the Wiltern Theatre and Sept. 6, the EchoPlex, the downstairs dance hall below the Echo club. The 44-year-old music star said the goal was “a very, very limited run of shows and that each would be special and more fan-orientated and not in cavernous arenas, but places where you actually like to see bands. It seemed like a way for fans to wish us off.”

After the jump, read another portion of TR’s interview with The LA Times and see the full set list from last night’s performance at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, IL …

The four L.A. concerts follow a similar four-show run in New York and a two-show stop in Chicago. (Nails also will appear Sunday at the Virgin Festival in Toronto.) Reznor said it was appropriate to finish up here, the place he now firmly considers home. “I’m excited about unpacking my suitcase and burning it,” Reznor said, clearly weary after too many months on the road, both with the summer tour with Jane’s and the Nails arena tour that began in 2008. After the final note is played at the EchoPlex, he will turn his attention to his pending nuptials (he is marrying singer Mariqueen Maandig next month) and songwriting, as well as many other pursuits across today’s digital entertainment landscape. He is not giving up music, just the grind of touring and perhaps, he has hinted, taking an emotional break from his older material, much of which serves as a document of his grim days in a dungeon of drugs and booze. In New York, however, at Webster Hall, Reznor and his band (guitarist Robin Finck, bass player Justin Meldal-Johnsen and drummer Ilan Rubin) connected with classic Nails material in an energizing way. The band played the entirety of its 1994 landmark, “The Downward Spiral.” “It was the first time we had ever done that, and it was cool; we didn’t announce it or anything,” Reznor said. “It was incredibly fun to play, and judging from online, people thought that was a pretty special thing to do.” He brought out Peter Murphy of Bauhaus during the New York shows (Murphy actually was lowered into the venue on a cable and, like a dour bat, performed part of the time while suspended upside down), and Reznor promises more guests and surprise sets in Los Angeles. “Every show will be different and unique,” he said.

The full interview HERE is a must read … it gives a bit of a TR retrospective over the course of his career and is very well-written. As anxious as I am to bear witness to the next round of shows, I’m growing more despondent over the finality. Even tho there is the promise of more music in the future and no 100% guarantee that NIN won’t ever tour again, I can’t help but start to feel the loss. I cannot even explain fully how lucky I feel to be able to attend the coming shows here in LA. Plus, I’m really looking forward to my sit down interview with Trent Reznor on the last date of the tour. Here is the set list from last night’s show at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, IL:

The Beginning Of The End
Survivalism
Heresy
March Of The Pigs

It turns out that TR almost canceled the show last night since he got suddenly sick. Here is his message to fans that was posted on the official NIN forum today:

Nice to see you enjoyed the show – I did too.
I’ll tell you a secret – we almost canceled because I woke up sick and unable to talk complete with chills, etc. I spent all day sleeping trying to shake it but still felt terrible walking to the stage… then something happened and by the end I felt great. Weird.

By all accounts, TR sounded great last night and no one knew that he was feeling under the weather. I hope he’s feeling better today tho … I cannot wait to hear how tonight’s performance in Toronto goes … and, of course, to see the LA shows this coming week. Remember if you have ideas for questions for my upcoming interview with TR (keeping in mind I want the focus to be on the Wave Goodbye Tour), please send them along or message me on Twitter using the hashtag #ninterview.

Upgrade U

August 31st, 2009

After my bizzy week in NYC last week, I was lookin’ to do a whole lotta nothin’ this weekend. David and I spent a quiet day inside and away from the blistering heat outside. We stepped out for late lunch and to run some erreands, tho. I needed to pick up the new Mac OS X Snow Leopard upgrade disc and we needed to get some food for our cubbards:

I spent much of the evening with the upgrade (which was easy, quick and totally painless) and David and I put down a bottle of twistcap wine. Trust me, it was a nice night :)

This evening, I believe we are meeting up with Darion for our weekly hang session … movie? dinner? We’ll see.

Hot Dude Of The Week: Patrick L.

August 31st, 2009

While temperatures are soaring outside (well, at least here in SoCal), I think it would be appropriate to amp up the hotness level here on the blog this find Sunday as well … oh, and look at that … right in time to say hello to the Hot Dude of the Week! Say hello to Patrick L:

Click HERE to see more pictures of Patrick L.
HMMM … Mr. Patrick here has taken all the guesswork out of deciding which is hotter — speedos or boardshorts — and just skips right to the underwear … which look like a jock strap, actually. MMMM MMMM. Yes, there is something to be said for minimalism, don’t you think? Enjoy!!

Bella Swan & Edward Cullen Suface On The Set Of ‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’

August 31st, 2009

In the past couple of weeks we’ve seen actors from The Twilight Saga: Eclipse roaming the streets of Vancouver, BC (where the film is currently in production) doing pretty much everything BUT working on the film (tho we did see photos of Bryce Dallas Howard [Victoria] and Xavier Samuel [Riley] shooting a scene last Tuesday). One presumes that actual work has been underway but until today we’ve not been privy to any evidence to that effect. Here, at last, are photos of Kristen Stewart, in costume as Twilight protagonist Bella Swan, and Billy Burke, in costume as her on-screen dad with a penchant for the porn’stache Charlie Swan, on the set of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse earlier this week:

Is it terribly wrong that I like the porn’stache on daddy Swan? Yeah, prolly. In any event, you will notice that Bella is clutching her fake diploma in her photo which means that they were shooting the graduation scene in the film. Exciting, no? After the jump, check out a photo of the perfectly coiffed and adequately pale Robert Pattinson, in costume as Edward Cullen, skulking elsewhere on the Eclipse set this week as well …

Robert Pattinson is back to his old tricks. The actor was spotted stepping back into Edward Cullen’s shoes for the first time for the third Twilight installment Eclipse. RadarOnline.com has the first photos of the actor’s return to the role that made him a household name. Looking like an average, angst-ridden teenager (plus a pale face and extra-rosy lips), Pattinson took a break from filming in Vancouver and hung out with co-stars and fellow bloodsuckers Ashley Greene and Jackson Rathbone.

No rest for the weary … it’s amazing these folks have time to breathe. Yes, they enjoy some downtime but they’ve all been pretty much working non-stop for months now … and they are doing it all for YOU! I hope you appreciate their efforts ;)

The Honeymoon Is Over For Newlyweds Alyssa Milano & David Bugliari

August 31st, 2009

After gettin’ hitched a couple of weeks ago and then promptly jetting off to the South Pacific for their relaxing honeymoon, it looks like the party is over for newlyweds Alyssa Milano and David Bugliari who left the serenity of their tropical getaway yesterday. Considering how amazingly relaxing their honeymoon sounded, I’d say they are quite refreshed and ready to get back to whatever it is that they’ve got going on these days:

A week after they celebrated their love with a romantic country wedding for 175 friends and family members, newlyweds Alyssa Milano and David Bugliari are enjoying every moment of their private honeymoon getaway. “They’re having an incredible time,” says a friend of the couple’s. “They’ve already celebrated their one-week anniversary.” Indeed, the lovebirds have giddily Tweeted from their tropical travels to an undisclosed South Pacific resort. “A week ago today, I married my best friend,” Milano, 36, wrote on Aug. 22. “Seems like yesterday. Time flies.” Later that day Bugliari, 30, wrote: “1st [Alyssa] & I had a cooking class – amazing. 2nd, spa – amazing! Then dinner … yup, amazing”

But, alas, like all good things … their honeymoon holiday is over. Again, let’s send out our love and congrats to the happy couple on their nuptials and wish them a lifetime of happiness together. Now the countdown begins for Alyssa’s bump watch. What do y’all think, will it be sooner or later?

Gwen, Zuma, Kingston & Gavin Rossdale Hit The Beach

August 31st, 2009

Here are a couple supercute pics of the Stefani-Rossdale family enjoying a peaceful stroll on a beach in Malibu, CA this weekend just one week after they celebrated the first birthday of their newest child, Zuma Nesta Rock. Here are Gwen, Zuma, Gavin and Kingston soaking up the sun yesterday afternoon:

It’s been really dang hot here in SoCal in the past few days (temps have exceeded 100°F in many parts of the area) so it would make sense that the family would want to spend as much time as possible at the beach. While I would encourage that the little tykes wear some kind of head covering in all that sun, I’m certain they have been swathed in überprotective sunscreen. I’m curious to see how long this little family stays a foursome … cuz I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they began working on their next addition to the family.
