Michael Been

Those wishing to pay their respects to the Call’s Michael Been are invited to a memorial service that will be held in his honor on Friday night in Santa Monica, Calif. As Spinner reported at the time, Been passed away on August 19, after he suffered a massive heart attack backstage at Belgian music festival Pukkelpop. He was 60 years old. In addition to speakers and eulogies, his son, Robert Been (of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club), will give a special performance, along with several special guests.

After leading the Call through a 20-year career, Michael Been took an active role in his son’s band, serving not only as BRMC’s soundman but also as their mentor and adviser. He was on tour with the band at the time of his death. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Been’s memory via a gift should make a donation to MusiCares or the Not For Sale Campaign. Clicking on those links will take you directly to their respective donation pages.

Best Songs of 2010 — Part Two

September 3rd, 2010

Filed under:

The current retro movement in the best songs of 2010 is a win-win: Oldsters who had declared music dead can now listen to new songs, making them look less uncool to their kids. Meanwhile, young folks can use new artists to discover songs from the past, which means they might finally learn who Al Green is. But even the non-retro tracks offer a respectful tip of the hat to what preceded it. Here is our second installment of the best songs of 2010, featuring tunes that had been spinning in our heads all summer.

‘Come and Get It’
Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reed
Speaking of school, Reed had been accepted to the University of Chicago, but he found better music education in Mississippi juke joints and the More Like Christ Christian Fellowship Church on Chicago’s South Side, where he not only performed but found mentors who taught him authentic soul. This horn-heavy tune, led by Reed’s Jackie Wilson-like energy, is good ole sweaty soul.

PVT, ‘Light Up Bright Fires’ — Video Premiere

September 3rd, 2010

For PVT’s video for the second single off their recent album ‘Church With No Magic,’ the band enlisted director Alex Smith to match the moody synth track perfectly. The clip finds the band members illuminated with bright electronic fires, surrounded by swirling bokeh and pulsating lights, and as vocalist Richard Pike’s face disintegrates into a digitized likeness, duplicates and fades, a video of a video of a video of drummer Laurence Pike takes strange shapes and lights spiral behind, over and through track architect Dave Miller. Let PVT pilot you through their audiovisual trip in the exclusive Spinner video premiere of ‘Light Up Bright Fires.’

Eden Brent: A Jazz Queen With a Case of the Blues

September 3rd, 2010

Filed under:

Eden Brent

Jazz grew out of the blues some time in the late 19th or early 20th century in and around New Orleans. While the two styles grew apart as each developed its own lexicon, there’s no mistaking the fact that the they are deeply intertwined – one need look no further than Billie Holiday, Count Basie and most musicians from New Orleans and other places on the Delta.

Pianist Eden Brent falls into this nebulous musical world, singing in a raspy voice and banging away on her piano as if she was playing at a speakeasy during Prohibition. Perhaps she could have been a contemporary of Bessie Smith, but to see this woman play and hear her speak leaves little doubt that she lives in the here and now. The proof is also on her third album, ‘Ain’t Got No Troubles,’ which was recorded at the famed Piety Street Studio in New Orleans.

Carlos Santana Gets Olivia Harrison’s Blessing for ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ Cover

September 3rd, 2010

For Carlos Santana’s latest album, ‘Guitar Heaven: Santana Performs the Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time,’ the axeman teams with vocalists like Chris Cornell, Rob Thomas and Scott Weiland to cover songs by Led Zeppelin, Cream, the Rolling Stones and more. During a recent press junket in Las Vegas, the guitar legend admitted that the album, which was conceived by Clive Davis, initially made him nervous.

“I feel really grateful and really honored that he pursued with a lot of intensity and diligently, because I was afraid, straight up,” Santana said of working with Davis. “Each time he convinced me, he took layers and layers of fear and made me realize there’s a way to crystallize these beautiful songs in a way that, like Wayne Shorter would say, ‘We have arrived completely new, totally familiar.’”

Drew Barrymore, Beastie Boys

When Drew Barrymore walks into a karaoke bar, our guess is that the floor is all hers. Good thing that she comes prepared: “I always do the Beastie Boys‘ ‘Paul Revere,’” Barrymore tells Spin. “I’m going to sound like a jackass, so I might as well pick a cool song and be a cooler jackass.” No argument there. Now here’s a little story she’s got to tell, about three bad brothers you know so well …

Meet Ashley Horn, Lindsay Lohan’s Other Sister

September 3rd, 2010

Lindsay Lohan‘s life just keeps getting more interesting … not only has she seemingly NOT ceased her partying ways despite being freshly released from rehab, not only has her estranged father moved all the way across the country so that he can live closer to Lindsay in order to try and infiltrate her life … but NOW she is learning that she has another sister, fathered by Michael Lohan as a result of a brief love affair in the early 90′s. Life & Style magazine has all the deets:

Just a week after Lindsay Lohan was released from jail, an unexpected family member is reaching out to help, claiming she is the stars long-last half sister! Life & Style has exclusively obtained the birth certificate of 15-yr-old Ashley Horn — and it names Linday’s father, Michael Lohan, as her dad. Ashley’s mother, Kristi –who had a brief affair with Michael in the early 1990’s while he was married to (but separated from) Dina–came forward with their story in 2008, but Michael denied that he was the father. “In December 2008 we had a court hearing that Michael was ordered to appear at for the DNA testing,” Kristi tells Life & Style. When Michael didn’t show (he says he was on probation and couldn’t travel), a judge ruled that his name could be added to the birth certificate. But Michael is still denying that he’s Ashley’s father, telling Life & Style, “I’d be glad to take a DNA test!” Kristi also claims that Michael owes a staggering $300,000 in back child support (a ruling his lawyers are contesting). Now, Lindsay Lohan’s not the only one ripping into Michael for not being there for his family. “I do not trust him, and I don’t want to be around him or part of his life,” Ashley tells Life & Style. “I could never call Michael Lohan ‘Dad.’ A dad is a person who is there for you and takes care of you.” Ashley says she wanted to reach out to Lindsay this summer when the star was in jail and rehab, but having no ties to the family made it impossible. “I wanted to help Lindsay in some way, but what was I supposed to do?” Ashley tells Life & Style. “I don’t even know how to contact her.”

In response to this story by L&S, Daddy Lohan is telling TMZ that Ashley is not his daughter … and he is willing to go to Maury Povich to prove that she is not:

Michael Lohan is trying to put an end to allegations he fathered an illegitimate daughter 15 years ago … and to clear his name, he’s turning to the expert in daddy DNA drama — Maury Povich. Sources tell TMZ … Lohan is currently talking to “Maury” producers about going on the show and taking a paternity test to prove he never impregnated Kristi Kaufmann … who claims she had an affair with Mike in the ’90s. Lohan tells TMZ Kaufmann has demanded child support in the past … and even changed the child’s birth certificate to bear Michael’s last name … which would make the kid Lindsay adjacent.

I mean, how much more trashy can all of this get? Wait a minute, don’t answer that … I’m afraid we may find out. If I were Ashley Horn, I’d want to keep news that Michael Lohan was my father a HUGE secret. UGH. Trust me, Ashley … you do NOT want to actually become a Lohan.
