LOS ANGELES, Calif. — A lawyer says the mother of the actress Phil Spector was convicted of killing has settled her wrongful death suit against the legendary music producer.

Attorney John Taylor tells the Los Angeles Times the terms of Friday’s settlement were confidential, but says his client, Donna Clarkson, is pleased and relieved the suit is over.

Lana Clarkson was shot and killed in the foyer of Spector’s Alhambra mansion nine years ago.

Donna Clarkson attended the 2009 trial daily, and testified that her daughter was upbeat and not at all suicidal, as Spector’s defense alleged.

Highlight: “We knew from the outset that we wanted a video that was exciting and funny — but also a bit unnerving,” guitarist Xan McCurdy tells Spinner. “Alicia (J. Kami Thompson’s ‘Love Lies’: Richard Thompson’s Daughter Releases Debut LP

February 6th, 2012

Jana Chillieno

Kami Thompson’s path to a music career seems like a natural one given where she comes from: Her parents are the British folk rock performers Richard and Linda Thompson, and her brother Teddy is also a musical artist. Yet for Kami, joining the family profession started out with hesitation.

“I didn’t think I’d be any good,” she tells Spinner. “Yet to be disproved, but you either have to get stuck in at some point or stop harping on about it, consequences be damned.”

Thompson released her debut album, ‘Love Lies,’ in the U.K. last October, and it’s now out in the States. “I’ve been doing a little bit more singing,” she says. “I’ve done a couple of tours and written enough songs. I figured I should record them. It was the right time because I had the songs and it was time to go.”

Freshkills Get ‘Deeply Nihilistic’ on ‘Positive Vibes’ — Song Premiere

February 6th, 2012

Brooklyn is home to some of music’s best up-and-coming rock bands, and the Freshkills are no strangers to that scene. They’ve been pushing the limits of lyricism with spoonfuls of New York grit since the beginning of the Brooklyn musical renaissance. The band tapped Jim Sclavunos (Sonic Youth) to produce their third release, ‘Raise Up the Sheets,’ a raucous new indie record.

The album’s first single ‘Positive Vibes,’ captures the band’s unique attitude. Lead singer Zachary Lipez uses stunted rhythms to inject immediacy throughout the choruses, blending the breeziness of Jim Morrison and the snarling gravel of the Strokes.

Steven Tyler’s National Anthem: Aerosmith Singer Defends His Rendition

NORTH GREENFIELD, Ind. — Steven Tyler says he meant to sing the national anthem like that.

The Aerosmith frontman and “American Idol” judge endured plenty of jabs after his rendition of the anthem at the AFC Championship game last month, but Tyler says he doesn’t understand what all the fuss was about.

“I don’t know. As I said before, I put emphasis on, `In the land of the free’ and I went up,” Tyler explained. “Oddly enough I hit the note so I don’t know what they are talking about. I emphasized `free’ which was for freedom. It was well thought out prior to. I wasn’t messing with American tradition.”

Mamas and the Papas’ Michelle Phillips Is Disappointed in Modern Music, Almost Rewrote ‘California Dreamin” Church Verse

February 6th, 2012

At this year’s NAMM convention in Anaheim, Calif., Martin Guitars unveiled a special model guitar in honor of one of the most iconic groups from the ’60s, the Mamas and the Papas.

The story behind it is special, as is the woman who was on hand to sit and play the guitar, the lone surviving member of the group, Michelle Phillips. The project began when Martin’s CEO saw a PBS documentary on the Mamas and the Papas and noticed how many of the company’s guitars they used. They focused on a specific guitar that was featured on an old 45 sleeve, and recreated it with inlays featuring the signatures of Phillips and her late bandmates. Spinner sat down with Michelle to discuss the limited-edition guitar and her band’s legacy.

Tell us about the guitar.

This is the guitar that John Phillips always played onstage all the time. It’s a big, full-bodied guitar. I was really touched that Martin decided to do this. John always played Martins in the Journeymen, his other folk group, then on to the Mamas and the Papas. Always Martins. I was so touched when Martin called me to say they wanted to do a special series to commemorate the Mamas and the Papas. And can you believe they put out little figures in mother of pearl?

I gave one to my daughter Chynna and one to my son Austin with the promise that they can never be lent out or sold! And I still have a 1926 Martin at home

Watch: Madonna Performs The Halftime Show For Super Bowl XLVI

February 6th, 2012

OMFG! Epicness, BEYOND EPICNESS. Madonna SLAYED during her halftime performance at Super Bowl XLVI. Missed it? Wanna watch it again? Check out the performance in full below.

AHHHH! Now THAT is a mothereffing halftime show … the song selection was perfection, what a great mix of hits from Madonna‘s stellar career. The Vogue magazine animations were just … brilliant, BRILLIANT. Her stage was really amazing … great use of video, really smart all around. We basically got a mini-concert. I am now DYING to see her on tour this year … I mean, I was excited before but … DAMNIT, she just raised the bar into the stratosphere. I was in AWE the entire time. I wasn’t a big fan of the LMFAO guys but the dude jumping on the bouncy string was pretty cool Cee Lo, ugh, I’m really not a fan but … this version of Like A Prayer was pretty fantastic. When the chorus starting singing … I about lost my shizz.

Here is a cute photo that Maddy‘s manager Guy Oseary posted online just before Madonna took the stage to perform her show:

Let’s be real … Madonna killed it. Haters will hate, imitating popstars will try and emulate … but there can really only EVER be one Madonna:

And now … I have to know … what do YOU think?

Justin Bieber Is Not A Good Skateboarder

February 6th, 2012

Earlier this week, we saw photos of Justin Bieber getting a few skateboarding lessons from rapper Lil’ Wayne while the two chilled in Miami, FL in between recording sessions for JB‘s new album Believe. Today we get to see newer photos of Bieber *trying* to skateboard but as you can see below, Lil’ Wayne was nowhere to be seen … and, as a result, The Biebs wasn’t doing very well on his skateboard. Tsk Tsk.

Oh Justin, you silly boy you. I guess I can’t be mad at the kid for trying to bust out some sweet skateboarding moves … Lord knows I did the same when I was a young’n. But mebbe he should be focusing on what he does best (er, better) … and that is making music. Actually, on second thought, maybe I’d prefer Justin Bieber to be a failed skateboarder rather than a popstar. HMMM.

Prince William To The Rescue In The Falkland Islands

February 6th, 2012

When last we heard here on the blog of Prince William‘s military duties, he was newly married and already BACK to work as a RAF military pilot. Today we learn that he is back to work, again, on a very special mission. In celebration (?) of the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War, Great Britain has sent a fleet of military ships to the region to mark the occasion. Apparently, Argentina isn’t happy about it … but Prince William will be there to keep the peace! Click below to check out photos of the young prince in military action.

Simmering diplomatic tensions between Britain and Argentina have not deterred the Government from planning a series of high-profile events to mark the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War. The celebrations include a visit by a Foreign Office Minister, a new memorial to the Falklands victims and a service at St Paul’s Cathedral – all against the backdrop of growing anger in Buenos Aires, partly fuelled by Prince William’s deployment to the disputed territory. Wars are more usually celebrated on their 25th, 50th and 75th anniversaries. However, it is understood the decision to turn the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War into a major commemoration was taken partly as a mark of respect to Margaret Thatcher, who led Britain to victory as Prime Minister. It was hoped Lady Thatcher, 86, would be able to take part in the events. However, she has been forced to give up her public appearances due to frail health. Last week, the Argentine government was angered when it was announced that HMS Dauntless was being sent to the South Atlantic. The new Type 45 destroyer is armed with a battery of missiles which, in the words of one Royal Navy source, could ‘take out all of South America’s fighter aircraft, let alone those of Argentina’. Just hours later, Prince William arrived in the Falklands, although officials confirmed he will not be completing any ceremonial duties while on the islands but is there purely in his role with the RAF. The Prince began his duties as a search-and-rescue Sea King helicopter pilot yesterday. It was a low-key start for Flight Lieutenant Wales, who spent the first shift of his six-week tour being briefed on the challenging flying conditions. Yesterday it was also revealed a nuclear submarine would be deployed to the Falklands, reviving sensitivities over the sinking of the Argentine cruiser General Belgrano.

Hmmm … it sounds like this celebration could be dicey in diplomatic terms but my guess is that everything will go off without a hitch. Now that Prince William is on the scene to ensure that everyone stays in line, I’m sure the whole celebration will be a smashing success.

Francis Bean Cobain Reveals The Horrors Of Courtney Love’s Parenting Skills

February 6th, 2012

Remember back in December of 2009 when Courtney Love lost physical parental custody of her daughter Frances Bean Cobain and it was later reported that Frances testified in family court to live with her paternal grandmother rather than her own mother? Well, testimony from that family court hearing has made its way to the Internets this week and unsurprisingly, it paints a very negative portrait of C. Love as a mother. Frances gave very sad testimony in open court about how horrible a mother Courtney was to her and as a result, was able to not only live with her grandmother but was also able to get a restraining order against Courtney. Ugh. Read on for all the sad and gruesome details of Frances‘s testimony against her mother.

Frances Bean Cobain accused her mother Courtney Love of causing the death of their family pets in a newly revealed testimony. The 19-year-old filed a restraining order against Love in LA superior court in December 2009 after they got into a physical fight. Backed by evidence from her male nanny and others the judge granted her request, as well as ordering the Hole singer stay away from her daughter’s pet dog Uncle Fester. And in sworn testimony uncovered by The Fix, Frances claimed her mother lived on drugs, was a conspiracy theorist and said the singer’s hoarding caused the death of their family cat and dog. In addition, she accused her mother of taking her to a confrontation at her ex-boyfriend James Barber’s house. She said: ‘(Love) has taken drugs for as long as I can remember. She basically exists now on…Xanax, Adderall, Sonata and Abilify, sugar and cigarettes. She rarely eats… She often falls asleep in her bed while she is smoking, and I am constantly worried that she will start a fire (which she has done at least three times) that will threaten our lives.’ And Frances said her mother’s chaotic behaviour was the reason for the death of two family pets. She said her cat died after getting entangled in piles of Etsy fabrics, boxes of paperwork, trash and other possessions, while a dog died allegedly after swallowing a pile of Love’s pills. But there was plenty of other instances that had reportedly driven the aspiring artist to despair. In one incident she said her mother dragged her to James Barber’s house when she was 17, and that she sat in a taxi while her mother had a volcanic confrontation with her then boyfriend. She said: ‘She took me in a taxi to his house in the middle of the night, and from outside the house, in her bare feet, she screamed at him, threw rocks at the house, and threatened to burn his house down. His children were inside the house, but that did not stop my mother.’ Finally, she also slammed her mother’s constant claims of people stealing money from them. Frances said: ‘My mother is obsessed with uncovering fraud and spends much of her day raging about the fraud that has been perpetrated on her and on me. She incessantly rages about her many theories relating to the supposed incidences of “fraud.” She slams doors, breaks things, stomps around the hotel or apartment and spends hours on the phone, yelling.’ And she told the court Love had even threatened to jump off a balcony while she was watching. Ultimately Courtney was ordered to stay away from Frances, Uncle Fester, her paternal grandmother Wendy O’Connor and aunt Kimberly Cobain.
The latter pair were made temporary co-guardians.

Wow! I mean, I’m sure we all suspected that it must’ve been difficult for Frances Bean to have Courtney Love as a mother but … damn … this is some crazy talk. And, to be honest, I’m sure this testimony is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to C. Love‘s erratic behavior as a parent. Ugh, so sad. Naturally, Courtney is threatening to sue whoever is responsible for the leak of this family court testimony:

Courtney Love is unhappy that her secret family feud was leaking to a website. The singer has “confidential” deposition papers filed by her daughter Francis Bean Cobain in 2009 which accused her of the death of their cat and dog. James Janowitz, the lawyer who handled the family court proceedings in Los Angeles, is investigating The Fix and new e-book “Courtney Comes Clean” who got their hands on the court-sealed documents. “I don’t know how they were disclosed …When I find out what happened, we will take the appropriate legal action,” Janowitz said … Courtney is planning to sue whoever leak the papers. “For somebody to meddle in such private and personal matters is pretty reprehensible,” Janowitz said. “We can say that all of the statements made about [Love] relating to the court filings, her daughter and other personal matters are false.”

I dunno … the stuff that Frances testified to is tantamount to child abuse. Behavior like this should, IMHO, be prosecuted but … far be it for me or anyone else to meddle in family affairs. At this point, Frances has her freedom away from Courtney and Courtney has no other children to parent so … I guess it’s all water under the bridge. Still, it’s sad to read. Blah.
